Green Building Framework

Green Building Framework

Our green guesthouse at Kharghar under Youth Hostel brand is platinum rated as per green rating methodology developed by SLK Foundation
We are producing average 360 KW-Hrs of electricity since Sept 2017 We get credit for this with result our bills have come down to ZERO since last two months
We also have implemented following

On going composting unit that takes leaves, and wet garbage from others, using simple techniques , air, water around tree.

We have policies to source consumable's like jams, butter, tea do not generate much packing materials, or plastics.

We also discourage use of bathroom cleaners like Lizol, mosquito repellents like goodnight etc as it harms environment.

We collect rain water falling on roof top and use it for gardening, and toilet flushing ( 100% rainwater harvesting).

Grey water is being recycling by growing elaichi bananas We recycle grey water before releasing it.

We have installed working model of Mumbai's first "Zero discharge ecological sanitation" This ecological sanitation saves water and saves water pollution as it separates at source, urine, wash water and feces

We have sustainable aquarium that does not need changing of water, due to aquatic plants, on bed of compost

We have installed 300 Litres solar hot water system that gives scalding hot water for 9 months.

We offer bicycle to our guests on rent @ Rs 25 per day.

We offer free drinking water to rag pickers of our area We offer free of charge drinking water to poor ragpickers, who are the only ones who recycle our waste (Municipality simply throws it away !) We also offer them water to wash from our rainwater harvesting tank Also give them our dry garbage like plastic bottles, etc for recycling.

Last but not least, we also have free roaming hens that give organic, desi eggs.

We also offer 50% discounted stay for cancer patients coming for treatment at Tata Hospital, as our social responsibility for people undergoing hardships

We organize wellness programs each quarter by emphasizing on
a. Nutrition
b. Yoga/Exercise plans
c. Nature cure for lifestyle illnesses like obesity, Diabetes, Cancer, Hypertension, etc

We have weekend treks to near hills like Matheran, Kharghar's Parsik hill in association with www.yhaindia.org Our treks are plastic free and we plant saplings in hills or throw seeds of trees like Seetaphal, Jambhool, etc

As a “not for profit”, SLK Foundation is keen to share the green rating methodology with guesthouse, hostel, hotel, office and organization or society who wants to achieve ecological goal in an economical way
Architects are welcome to check out our nature friendly ways to solve the ecological issues in economical ways as we have discovered simple, effective solutions at fraction of cost of conventional technologies
We can advice hotels on “best Practices, ” “what works and what may not” in ecological matters as done in an economical way for all Youth Hostels in India.
